Real estate photography in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area can be both rewarding and challenging. As a professional in this field, I’ve gone through a lot of obstacles that have tested my patience and problem-solving skills. Here’s a glimpse into the hurdles I’ve faced and how I’ve overcome them with over time.
Unpredictable Traffic
The DMV area is notorious for its traffic congestion. Even with careful planning, unexpected delays can throw off an entire day’s schedule. I always leave an hour early for shoots, regardless of distance, but sometimes even that isn’t enough.
Missing Keys and Unprepared Properties
Arriving at a property only to find no access or an unprepared space can get frustrating. Sometimes it’s a missing key, an ongoing renovation, or even an uncooperative resident that’s not willing to have their space photographed. In any case, these situations can lead to wasted time, postponed shoots, and rescheduling headaches.
Challenging Conditions
Distressed properties present unique difficulties. While these are often for before-and-after shots, the poor conditions can make the job unpleasant and technically challenging. On the other hand, unexpected photo bombers, like pets or children, can disrupt the shoot and extend the time needed to capture the perfect shot.
Logistical Nightmares
In large urban areas like the DMV, parking poses a major issue—not to mention the cost involved. Lugging heavy, expensive equipment from distant parking spots to the property is not only tiring but also causes delays.
Equipment Mishaps
Perhaps the biggest challenge is “being the professional”. Making sure the right equipment is packed up is crucial to a successful shoot. Forgetting essential equipment like camera batteries or memory cards often results in an expensive emergency purchase from the nearest electronics store, which isn’t the most efficient option, and eats into profits.
Despite these challenges—and my ranting—real estate photography remains a fulfilling profession. The ability to create beautiful images that showcase properties at their best is incredibly rewarding. To aspiring real estate photographers: be prepared for these hurdles, but remember that your problem-solving skills and positive attitude are your greatest assets in this business.
